Hoodia Gordonii Weight Loss ResearchBy Mark Dailey Hoodia Gordonii is a unique plant, which has been eaten by the indigenous San Bushmen to treat stomach disorders and suppress their craving for food and water for more than twenty-five thousand years. This unique property of the plant has raised interest in the pharmaceutical community for the development of a safe and effective food supplement for weight loss. Ever since its discovery in 1970, there have been countless research studies and experiments on the extraction of its active component. Later, this component was found and known to be P57. The SANL (South Africa National Library) was responsible for the research and applied for its patent in 1977. It turned over the rights for the commercialization of the plant extract to a United Kingdom company named Phytopharm. Hoodia Gordonii As An Anti-Obesity Herb In mid 1977, the Phytopharm company started its pre-clinical testing on lab rats and compared it with similar other compounds. The pre-clinical experiments were supervised and conducted by Dr. Richard Dixey. These tests showed promising results and the project proceeded to clinical testing. In 1998, Phytopharm develops their anti-obesity formulation and decides to go into phase1 clinical testing. The test results showed that 70% of the trial participants have achieve their goals over the trial period. In October of the same year, Phytopharm collaborated with Pfizer in commercializing Hoodia Gordonii in the United States and worldwide. In 1999, A research facility and a plantation was started in South Africa to support ongoing experiments, clinical research and the development of Hoodia Gordinii. Joint research was conducted by both Phytopharm and Pfizer on the synthesis of the active ingredient. In 2002, Pfizer released its rights on the active ingredient because it was too hard to synthesize. On the same year, the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) acknowledged the rights of the San Tribesman over the local supply of Hoodia Gordonii, and granted them a percentage of the profits from the sales provided that the plants were sold as extracts. How Hoodia Gordonii Gained Its Fame After 2003, several clinical tests were conducted on the effectiveness of the new supplement. The experiments proved once and for all that Hoodia Gordinii is an effective and safe supplement for fighting obesity. In these experiments, eighteen overweight males participated in the activity, and the instant results were reduced craving for food, and a lesser overall calorie intake leading to as much as 10lbs average weight reduction in only a month’s time. Other separate tests were also conducted, and in one of these tests, was Stewart Gulian, a resident of Palm Beach Florida, who lost 80lbs using Hoodia Gordonii, and was featured on both CNN and CBS. The mode of action of this food supplement is the reduction of desire for food. These statistics do not really set the standard for all obese people, but the fact of the matter is that it’s a proven fact that people tend to feel hungry less often by consuming the extract of Hoodia Gordonii. In effect, these people eat less than they normally do and in effect loss weight by natural means. Mark Dailey is a Self-Proclaimed Health Expert who has used Hoodia Gordonii to lose over 35 pounds.
