What is the ideal amount of weight to lose per month on a diet?

Answered By Editor

Generally, a safe weight loss is considered to be two to four pounds per month. This is a slow, gradual weightloss and will give your body time to adjust to the changes in your eating habits as well as changes to your exercise.

If you starve yourself and force yourself to lose weight, the body will gain weight back the moment you quit your diet. On the other hand, gradual loss will allow your body to know how to interpret the changes in your bodyweight and to not counter them.

When you first start dieting you may lose more in the first month, but keep in mind this is mostly water change in weight. After the first month you will start to taper off. The main thing is don't get discouraged by the small number.
