How good are vegetarian diets for your health?

The ADA has approved vegetariean diets as being healthy. However, the ADA also states that a vegetarian diet needs to be "appropriately planned." Simply scraping the meat off your plate and eating what's left is not a good idea if you're interested in maintaining good health, strong muscles and bones and having the needed energy. It takes prior planning and all comes down to knowing what you're eating and in what quantities.

Vegetarians should be careful to include the following key nutrients that could be lacking in a vegetarian diet:

* iron
* calcium
* protein
* vitamin D
* vitamin B12
* zinc

If meat, fish, eggs and dairy products are not going to be part of your diet, you'll need to know how to get enough of these nutrients. Consider taking a daily multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. For vegans, it's hard to get enough vitamin B12 in your diet, so a supplement may be needed there, too.
